In the summer of 2021, I worked as a Graphic Design Intern at the School of Graphic Communications Management at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). One of my key projects was the DAM Community Webinar.
This virtual event, hosted in June and November 2021, focused on education and networking within the Digital Asset Management community. It featured industry leaders like David H. Lipsey from Rutgers University and Dr. Reem El Asaleh from TMU.
As the sole graphic designer, I developed the brand design for the webinars, including the event logo, presentation templates, and visual marketing guidelines, to ensure a cohesive and engaging experience.
Created With
Professor 1
“We’re aiming for a design that’s boxy, captures the essence of TMU, and remains simple and straightforward.”
The Start of DAM
The professors requested a logo that would be simple and memorable for the audience. To meet this requirement, I designed the logo using colors from the official university style guide. To add visual interest, I incorporated isometric elements for a touch of depth, rather than opting for a flat, two-dimensional design. This became the official logo for the first webinar in June 2021.
There are two versions of the general invitation letter design. The professors requested a balance between playfulness and the formality expected of an official invitation. Additionally, the letter needed to highlight that the event was taking place in Canada and include elements related to Digital Asset Management (DAM).
In Version 1 (Right), I featured a line illustration of a beaver, Canada's national animal, to add a playful touch. However, it ended up looking too "cute" for the occasion, and the gray polka-dot background made the text difficult to read.
For Version 2 (Left), I simplified the design with a plain white background and centered the logo to fill the empty space at the top. The beaver illustration was replaced with the CN Tower, emphasizing that the event was hosted in Toronto. To add energy and excitement, I included a bold pink stroke along the left side, aiming to engage readers and encourage them to register for the webinar.
Awards & Certificates
The certificates, listed in order—Donation Certificate, Award/Prize Certificate, and Gift Certificate — were designed to align with the event's overall theme. To ensure visual consistency, I used only the color palette derived from the logo.
Google Survey Banners
The Google Form banner needed to be easily recognizable and consistent with the DAM (Digital Asset Management) theme. In the designs presented, I incorporated telecommunication and media icons to highlight the broad application of digital asset management. The two thin magenta blocks on either side subtly reference the red bands of the Canadian flag.
Presentation Deck & Landing Page
The following materials were developed for marketing and promoting the 2022 virtual ZOOM webinar. The artwork was tailored to align with different media platforms, including LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and the university’s homepage.
Reflection
My main takeaway from this project was learning how to communicate effectively through design to create attention-grabbing visuals for a themed webinar. Given that the target audience was primarily students, I focused on developing professional yet engaging promotional banners to capture their interest. For future events, I’d like to incorporate more interactive elements, such as animating the yellow “blob” in the background to move subtly within the bounding box, adding a dynamic touch to the design.
